Sketched Photo Effect
This tutorial was written by the then owner of legittutorials.com . I bought the site and tutorials from him and have moved it to designertuts.com
In this tutorial you will learn how to create a unique sketched photo effect, which looks good in most photos. In this tutorial you will learn several filters and layer adjustments.
Step 1: Find a Picture
Before we can begin, you're going to need a photo to use. I will be using this picture of a flower. Open the picture in photoshop, and resize it if you need to (image>image size).
Step 2: Filters
Make a duplicate of picture (ctrl+j) and pixelate it. To pixelate it go to "filter>pixelate>mosaic", and set the cell size to 17.
Sharpen the pixelated layer twice (filter>sharpen>sharpen x2). Set the Layer to overlay, and lower the opacity. Merge the two layer (ctrl+e).
Make a duplicate of the merged layer (ctrl+j). Apply glass (filter>distort>glass) to the layer with the settings shown in the picture.
Set the layer mode overlay and lower the opacity to 50%. Merge the two layers, just like before (ctrl+e).
Make another duplicate. This time we will be applying crosshatch (filter>brush strokes>crosshatch). Use the settings shown in the picture.
Set the layer mode to hard light, and lower the opacity to 50%. Merge the two layers (ctrl+j). Ok, just one more filter. Duplicate the layer, and make sure your colors are set to black and white (press x). Apply graphic pen (filter>sketch>graphic pen) with the settings used in the picture.
Set the layer mode to overlay and lower the opacity to 50%.
Step 3: Adjustments
Now lets create a brightness and contrast layer. To do this simply go to "layer>new layer adjustment>brightness and contrast". Set the brightness to -100 and the contrast to +100.
Create another new adjustment layer, this time use curves. Use the settings shown in the picture.
Create another new adjustment layer, this time use vibrance. Use the settings shown in the picture:
Alright, just one more new layer adjustment. This time use levels, and use the settings shown in the picture.
Step 4: brushing
The pictures looking pretty good right? Now lets add a little depth. Create a new layer (ctrl+shift+n) and grab a 400 pixel white soft brush, and cover the main flower.
Set the layer mode to overlay and the opacity to 25%. Here's how it should look so far.
Step 5: Dark Brushing (Optional)
Create another new layer. This time grab a 500 pixel black soft brush. Brush around the main flower.
Apply gaussian blur to the black brushed layer (filter>blur>gaussian blur). Set the amount to 30.
Lower the opacity of this layer to 70% and your done, here's how it should turn out.
