Gel Button

Gel Button 10
This tutorial will show you a simple way to create a gel button.

Start by creating a new 500 x 500 pixel canvas. Create a new layer and draw out a vector shape. (There are many available in your custom shapes window/ custom shape tool, you can find more on the internet, just search for “photoshop custom shapes”).

Gel Button 1

Double click on the layer. Your layer styles window should pop up. Add in the following properties to your layer styles:
Gel Button 2

Gel Button 3

Gel Button 4

Gel Button 5

Gel Button 6

Gel Button 7

Gel Button 8

Color Codes Used:
Bevel and Emboss: Shadow Mode #009DE7
Cover Overlay: Blend Mode #0CAAB9
Stroke: #108393

This is what you should have so far:

You can go back to the custom shapes tool and add in another graphic over the one you have. Change the opacity of the layer to 60%.

and that’s it! Hope you enjoyed it.

Great tutorial! I’m sure I’ll find it very useful for many different things.

One thing though regarding the bevel and emboss. You can skip that stage as the highlight and shadow opacities are both set to 0%, making the effect invisible.

I couldn’t reproduce the gel buttons. Is it possible to get a sample PSD file

  • admin says:

Sorry I don’t have one as the tutorial was done quite a while ago and the original psd is long gone.

Can’t reproduce this in CS4, I may be doing something wrong but I doubt it.

    Where does it go wrong?
