Convert Photo to Painting and Add a Frame

frame 4
This tutorial will show you how to give a photo a “painting look” and how to put a frame round it. Ideal for making a gift of a family photo.

Import your photograph into photoshop:
frame 1

On top: click Filter > Artistic > Paint Daubs… Change your brush size to: 2 ; Sharpness to: 9 ; Brush Type: Simple.
frame 2

Create a new layer below your photo layer. Click Image > Canvas Size: add 100 more pixel to your width and height.

Go back to your photograph layer. Click Layer > Layer Style > Inner Shadow.

Here are the properties for this layer style:
Blend Mode: Multiply (black)
Opacity: 50%
Angle: 30 Degrees (Use Global Light)
Distance: 5 PX
Choke: 0%
Size: 5 PX

frame 3

Click on your white layer below the photograph. Click Layer > Layer Styles > Pattern Overlay. Choose a pattern that would suit your photograph. (I would suggest using the rock patterns).

frame 4

Now your image is complete. You can now send them to your friends as e-cards or print them out as gifts! Be creative and experiment using different layer styles on your white layer.

Nice technique, but the frame looks too flat. A soft white-to-nothing gradient from the top left outwards might make it look better. Also, adding a 3px inside stroke on the picture with color sampled from the lighter tones of the pattern would give the frame a more natural beveled look on its inner edges.

But generally, nice creativity! I never thought of doing this. Thanks. :)
