Creating the Stitch Effect

In this tutorial you will learn how to create an awesome stitch effect using photoshop, and illustrator. This tutorial was originally written by Amir at LegitTutorials.com . Enjoy.

Pre-Step: A Texture

Before we begin, you’re going to need to download a denim texture. You can download one here.

Step 1: Illustrator Document

We will be using photoshop’s sister, adobe illustrator, for the first part of the tutorial. Create a new document in illustrator.

Step 2: Circle

Make a circle with the ellipse tool. Next open up the stroke window, and enter the following attributes:

Step 3: Save It

Unfortunately, that is all we will be doing with illustrator. Before we go into photoshop, save the illustrator file as an eps.

Step 4: Photoshop Time!

After closing illustrator, create a new document in photoshop 500×500 pixels in size.

Step 5: Inner

Using the bucket tool, fill the background a nice green (#95c7c5). After that, create a new layer, and make a green (#2b8c88) circle in the center.

Step 6: Jeans

Now its time to use the denim texture. Copy and paste the texture to our document, it should cover everything. Make a Selection of the inner circle (ctrl+click on the layers pallet). Right click inside the selection, and click inverse.

Step 7: Trimming

Now that we have the inverse selection, hit the delete key to trim the extra denim. Change the layer mode to soft light, and lower the opacity to approximately 36percent. Don’t forget to merge the texture layer with the circle layer before we continue.

Step 8: Duplicate

Duplicate the layer, open blending options, and apply color overlay + Inner Shadow.

Step 9: Transform

Use the free transform tool (ctrl+t) to make the duplicate circle a little bit smaller then the original.

Step 10: .EPS

Now it time to add the stitch effect that we made in illustrator. Open up your .eps file in photoshop, and use the following settings:

Step 11: Magic Wand

Grab the magic wand tool, and use it to remove all the unnecessary white, leaving us only with black dashes.

Step 12: Scale it

Copy the dashes to our photoshop document. Use the free transform tool and scale it down to fit over the darker circle.
