Newspaper Photo Effect

The proper term for the newspaper photograph effect is half tone. The traditional halftone process converts different tones into dots of varying size. The eye has limited resolving power and, at a distance, is tricked into seeing these dots as continuous tone.

This effect is extremely easy to re-create in photoshop.

Click on Image > Mode > Grayscale. A screen will pop up asking if you’d like to discard your color information. Click yes.

Click on Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone. change your settings to:

Here is a view of your completed photograph which is I admit isn’t great! The reason for this is not so much the tutorial method but instead the low resolution starting image. For this method to work well you need a high res image to start with. So bearing this in mind you should get better results when you try it out yourself. (I intend to update this tutorial in the future to show a better example):
